Custom Rotary Kiln Seals

Rotary kiln sealing refers to the mechanical sealing device installed at the inlet and outlet of a rotary kiln. It is mounted between the rotating kiln shell and the stationary kiln hood or kiln tail housing. Its main function is to prevent cold air from entering the kiln, which would disturb the thermal process, while also preventing high-temperature gas, dust, and material from leaking out. This ensures safe operation and improves the working environment.
Common Types of Rotary Kiln Seals
1. Fish Scale Seal (Lamella Seal)
Fish scale seals can be used for both rotary kiln inlet seals and rotary kiln outlet seals. They are currently the most widely used sealing solution and are suitable for almost all modern dry-process cement rotary kilns.
AGICO Cement fish scale seals are made of multiple layers of heat-resistant steel plates. Different materials can be customized according to customer requirements.
Features
High flexibility
AGICO fish scale seal plates can reach a thickness of 0.6 mm, allowing tighter contact with the kiln shell and reducing cold air leakage. The plates can quickly recover their shape even after 360-degree bending without permanent deformation.
Long service life
The structure uses a three-layer composite design: inner wear-resistant layer, middle heat-insulating layer, and outer protective layer. This improves wear resistance, reduces heat transfer, prevents corrosion, and extends service life.
Easy maintenance
The structure is simple. Damaged plates can be replaced individually without full disassembly, reducing downtime and maintenance cost.
Low cost
AGICO lamella seals offer three “low”: low manufacturing cost, low installation cost, and low maintenance cost.

2. Graphite Block Seal
Graphite block seals are mainly used for kiln outlet sealing, but they can also be applied at the kiln inlet. They are a commonly used high-performance contact sealing system for cement rotary kilns, especially suitable for large rotary kilns with strict requirements for energy saving, environmental protection, and air leakage control. Their application range is relatively specialized.
Features
Low air leakage rate
Under spring pressure, the graphite blocks tightly press against the kiln shell to form a stable contact seal, significantly reducing air leakage and improving thermal efficiency.
Energy-saving performance
Due to better sealing performance, system heat efficiency is improved, fuel consumption is reduced, fan load is lowered, and kiln operation becomes more stable.

3. Labyrinth Seal
The labyrinth seal is a non-contact sealing system that uses multiple labyrinth passages to block airflow and dust leakage. In cement rotary kilns, it is commonly used for kiln inlet and outlet sealing, usually as part of a combined sealing system.
Features
Low wear
There is usually a gap between the seal and kiln shell, so there is no contact during operation, resulting in minimal wear and no damage to the kiln shell.
Good dust resistance
The labyrinth channel structure helps block dust effectively, making it suitable for harsh environments such as cement and lime plants.
4. Pneumatic Seal
Pneumatic seals are mainly used at kiln outlets for powder and granular material production. They are end-face contact seals. However, due to difficult maintenance and system complexity, they are no longer a mainstream recommended solution and are being gradually phased out.
Features
Significant energy saving
AGICO pneumatic seals reduce air leakage, improve combustion efficiency, increase secondary air temperature, and reduce heat loss.
Low mechanical maintenance
The structure has fewer wearing parts, resulting in low mechanical maintenance. However, it relies heavily on compressed air systems and filtration systems, requiring strict maintenance of the air supply system.
