Rotary kiln types
Classification by heating method
The flame or hot air directly enters the cylinder and directly contacts and heats the material. Commonly used in lime calcination, cement clinker and other processes.
- Advantages: high heat transfer efficiency and fast heating
- Disadvantages: easy to introduce impurities, and slightly low control accuracy.

The heat source is outside the furnace shell or through pipes, and the material is isolated from the flame. Commonly used for high-purity materials or highly volatile materials, such as catalyst carriers and lithium battery positive electrode materials.
- Advantages: high product purity and low pollution
- Disadvantages: high investment and slightly low thermal efficiency

Classification by the nature of the processed materials
Mainly used for calcining cement clinker, it is the most common type of rotary kiln in the building materials industry.
- Dry rotary kiln: After the raw materials are dried and ground, they enter the rotary kiln for calcination. It has high thermal efficiency and is the current mainstream process.
- Wet rotary kiln: The raw materials are slurry, with high heat consumption, but strong operating stability. It is now gradually replaced by the dry method.

Applied to the reduction, roasting, roasting and impurity removal of metal ores, such as:
- Alumina roasting kiln: bauxite roasting to produce alumina.
- Manganese ore and nickel ore rotary kiln: used for pre-reduction or roasting.
- Sponge iron rotary kiln: direct reduced iron (DRI) is produced using coal as a reducing agent.

It is used for the incineration or harmless treatment of solid waste, hazardous waste, sludge, domestic garbage, etc., and is an important equipment in the field of environmental protection treatment.

It is used for high-temperature calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate) to produce active lime (calcium oxide), and is commonly used in the steel, papermaking, chemical and other industries.

5. Chemical Rotary Kiln
It is suitable for the roasting of chemical materials such as sulfuric acid slag, fertilizers, aluminum hydroxide, titanium dioxide, rare earth, etc.

Classification by applicable temperature and material
| Temperature Range | Main Materials | Application Fields |
| < 600 °C | Zinc oxide, catalysts, zeolite, carbon black | Fine chemicals, food industry, pharmaceuticals |
| 600–1000 °C | Aluminum hydroxide, activated carbon, calcium carbonate | Chemicals, environmental protection, building materials |
| 1000–1350 °C | Magnesite, limestone, bauxite | Metallurgy, refractory materials, cement |
| > 1350 °C | Chromite, manganese ore, ceramsite, quartz sand | High-temperature calcination, metal refining |

How much does it cost to invest in a rotary kiln?
As a systematic project, the investment of a rotary kiln is divided into two categories: fixed investment and operating costs. It must be comprehensively considered in combination with the project scale, raw material properties and technical routes.
Fixed Investment Composition
| Category | Cost Items | Estimated Proportion | Notes |
| Main Equipment | Rotary kiln body, drive system, electrical control, refractory lining | 40%–50% | Costs vary significantly based on equipment specifications |
| Auxiliary Systems | Preheater, cooler, dust removal system, desulfurization system | 20%–30% | Depends on process requirements |
| Civil Works & Installation | Foundation, plant structure, platforms, support frames | 10%–20% | Higher share in special climate zones or for heavy-duty equipment |
| Control System | PLC, DCS, temperature controllers, monitoring system | 5%–10% | Higher automation level leads to increased costs |
| Others | Freight, commissioning, taxes | 5%–10% | Can be adjusted depending on project location |
Operating Cost Breakdown
| Cost Item | Estimated Range | Notes |
| Fuel Cost | ¥80–300 per ton of product | Depends on use of natural gas, coal gas, electricity, etc. |
| Power Consumption | ¥20–50 per ton | Covers drive system, control system, etc. |
| Refractory & Consumables | ¥10–20 per ton | Includes refractory lining, sealing rings, thermocouples, etc. |
| Labor Cost | ¥80,000–150,000 per year per shift | High level of mechanization can reduce staffing needs |
| Maintenance Cost | 3%–5% of equipment value annually | Covers riding rings, refractory replacement, gearboxes, etc. |

3 Tips For Rotary Kiln Selection And Procurement
In the project establishment stage, scientific selection is the key link to control investment risks and ensure stable operation. Based on many years of design and operation and maintenance experience, our company proposes the following detailed selection process and precautions.
Selection of rotary kiln
Step 1: Clarify the target material and process parameters
- Raw material name, shape, particle size
- Whether pretreatment (drying, screening, crushing) is required
- The properties of the final product (whether it is high purity, particle size distribution)
Step 2: Confirm the type of treatment process
- Calcination or roasting?
- Does it produce flue gas or volatiles?
- Atmosphere type: oxidation, reduction, inertness?
Step 3: Confirm the output and continuous operation cycle
- Daily or hourly output
- Whether it is operated continuously in three shifts
- Whether a backup system is needed
Step 4: Combine investment capacity and construction cycle
- Annual budget arrangement
- Whether to build in phases
- Whether to use existing sites or need to build new plants
Key Selection Criteria
| Key Factor | Recommended Selection Direction |
| Material Temperature Requirement | Use steel shell for <1000°C; composite refractory lining required for >1300°C |
| Heat Transfer Efficiency | Consider using a preheater combined with counterflow combustion design |
| Product Purity | Indirect heating or stainless steel drum is recommended |
| Refractory Lining Material | Composite lining of lightweight firebricks and ceramic fiber |
| Sealing System | Labyrinth + gas-tight double-sealing system to minimize heat loss |
| Automatic Control | PLC with touchscreen recommended; supports remote commissioning and data analysis |
Is it worth investing in the rotary kiln?
National policy support
Under the background of the “dual carbon” strategy, energy-saving and environmental protection equipment has become a key support target, and the market space for energy-saving transformation of industrial kilns is huge, especially high-energy-consuming industries (building materials, non-ferrous metals, metallurgy) are in urgent need of rotary kiln systems with higher energy efficiency and lower emissions.
Technology upgrades promote industry innovation
- Automation and intelligent control have become the mainstream
- The number of multi-atmosphere multi-functional integrated rotary kilns has increased
