Application of the rotary calciner
The rotary calciner, an indispensable high-temperature treatment equipment in industrial production, is known as the industrial heart and its importance is self-evident. Today, let’s delve into the world of rotary kilns and see how they shine in different fields.
Chemical industry
In the chemical industry, rotary kiln calciners are commonly used for the calcination of coal activated minerals, preparation of catalysts, and production of pigments. These processes require precise control of temperature and atmosphere to ensure product quality and performance. In the metallurgical industry, chemical rotary kilns are used for sintering and roasting materials such as ores and concentrates. After calcination, the physical and chemical properties of these materials will change, providing suitable raw materials for subsequent smelting or processing.
Building material industry
In the building materials industry, rotary calciners are particularly widely used. The cement rotary kiln is one of the core equipment in cement manufacturing plant, used to calcine raw materials such as limestone into cement clinker. In addition, it can also be used for the production of other building materials, such as lime calcination plant, the calcination of ceramic raw materials. In the production of refractory materials, rotary calciner are also used for calcining raw materials to stabilize their size, increase their strength, and then process them into shapes.
Environmental protection industry
The application of rotary calciners is also indispensable in the field of environmental protection. It can be used to treat solid waste such as sludge, hazardous waste, etc. Through high-temperature calcination, these wastes can be harmless, reduced, and utilized as resources. In developed countries, the use of cement kilns to burn hazardous waste and garbage has a history of more than 20 years. This not only solves the problem of waste disposal, but also saves coal powder and realizes the resource utilization of waste.
Other fields
In addition, rotary calciners have also been applied in the field of new material preparation. Rotary calciner kilns are widely used in the processing of lithium, magnesium, and aluminum, as well as in the extraction of tailings, to improve resource utilization efficiency. By precisely controlling the calcination conditions, new inorganic materials and nanomaterials with specific properties can be prepared. The successful application of these technologies not only improves resource utilization efficiency, but also injects new impetus into the development of related industries.
Although rotary calciner are commonly used calcination equipment in industries such as cement, metallurgy, and chemical engineering, the selection of equipment in different scenarios directly affects production efficiency and costs. Choosing the wrong equipment can result in either insufficient production capacity or frequent malfunctions and shutdowns.

5 tips for selecting rotary calciner
Today, we will break down 5 core points for choosing a rotary calciner to help you avoid pitfalls accurately!
1. First, look at the material characteristics: choosing the right rotary calciner type is a prerequisite
The “temperament” of different materials varies greatly, and these parameters must be clarified before selecting a rotary calciner:
- Material particle size: Fine materials such as clay and ore can be selected with a short kiln body (such as Φ 2.5 × 30m), while coarse materials such as sand and gravel aggregates need a long kiln body (above Φ 3 × 50m) to avoid material accumulation;
- Humidity and viscosity: High humidity materials (such as coal) should be equipped with a drying function kiln body to prevent blockage; A kiln type with smooth inner walls and adjustable rotational speed is required for highly viscous materials such as sludge;
- Composition and hardness: For ores with high metal impurities, wear-resistant bricks such as corundum refractory materials are required for kiln lining.
2. Capacity demand needs to be matched: it is not advisable for small horses to pull large trucks.
The selection of kiln body size based on hourly output is the basis, and the reference formula is: kiln output ≈ π × diameter ² × length × filling rate × material density. Example:
- Small experimental line: Select a Φ 1.5 × 15m kiln with an hourly production capacity of 5-10 tons, suitable for laboratory research and development;
- Medium-sized production line: with a diameter of 2.5 × 40m kiln body and an hourly production capacity of 20-30 tons, commonly found in small and medium-sized ceramic factories;
- Large-scale industrial projects: with a diameter of over 4 × 60m and an hourly production capacity of over 50 tons, requiring professional dust removal and waste heat recovery systems.
3. Energy consumption and environmental protection: policy requirements cannot be ignored
The new environmental regulations are becoming stricter, and the proportion of energy consumption costs is increasing year by year. When selecting equipment, special attention should be paid to:
- Fuel type: Gas kilns are more energy-efficient than coal kilns by over 30% and have lower nitrogen oxide emissions; Biomass fuel kilns are suitable for areas with high environmental requirements;
- Thermal efficiency: The thermal efficiency of high-efficiency rotary kilns is usually ≥ 75%, which can reduce the energy consumption per unit product (refer to the “Industrial Kiln Energy Efficiency Guidelines (2024)”);
- Emission control: Equipped with low nitrogen burners or denitrification systems to avoid production restrictions due to environmental non-compliance.
4. Process temperature and control accuracy: Temperature determines quality
The calcination temperature is the core of product quality, and the equipment needs to match the process requirements:
- Low temperature calcination (below 800 ℃): choose ordinary refractory brick lining, low cost;
- Medium high temperature calcination (1000-1500 ℃): high-purity corundum bricks or lightweight insulation bricks are required to avoid kiln skin nodules;
- Temperature control requirements: Fine chemical raw materials require a temperature control accuracy of ± 5 ℃. It is recommended to choose a kiln body with an intelligent temperature control system, such as Siemens PLC control.
5. Equipment maintenance costs: avoid “buying but not using”
In long-term operation, maintenance costs are often more important than purchase prices:
- Supporting and blocking wheels: Choosing water-cooled supporting wheels can extend their lifespan and reduce maintenance frequency by 30%;
- Transmission system: high-power motor with planetary gear reducer, reducing the frequency of gearbox replacement;
- Sealing performance: Maze seal is superior to ordinary packing seal, and the air leakage rate is reduced to less than 5%.
Choosing a rotary calciner should not only focus on “cheap” or “well-known”, but also be evaluated comprehensively based on material characteristics, production capacity, and environmental policies. It is recommended to conduct small-scale experiments in the early stage, compare the solutions of 3-5 equipment manufacturers, and prioritize manufacturers with successful cases to avoid production hazards caused by selection errors!
